VERSE N°1 :
It is impossible to delay or refrain from singing at once now
that I see the summer returned;
and the orchards, just as if they were hoary,
appear white, and the meadows grow green.
Now a particular love holds me so completely in its power,
simply from the hope it has given me of an understanding
– see what it would do if I had anything of the act itself! –
that I hardly deign to seek solace in any other [love]..

VERSE N°2 :
The lady who has won me
as her friend has retained me willingly in her service;
in a short time she has acknowledged me [as her suitor] much better
than one for whom I have striven over a long period.
A proverb of the ancients tells me this:
«The man who waits for the [right] time and does nothing
when the time comes, deserves to find there is no time left»;
a long wait has interrupted many affairs.

VERSE N°3 :
With this she has given me back joy and delight
and stimulated and improved my intelligence,
for under these circumstances I think I have understood
that she wishes soon to make me rich with her friendship.
I have the backbiters to thank for this:
when they thought to harm me they did me good,
and I thank them that I have now broken free
and escaped my Lady Pitiless.

VERSE N°4 :
But have you ever heard of a business
such as this befalling any man alive? Listen to how this occurred!
My enemies have been twice as helpful
than they would have been had they loved me.
And have you ever seen supporters like this?

This is why I feel overjoyed
and envy no man in the world if my lady is willing
to hold me beside her one evening, clothed or naked,
in her husband’s place.
Never has such honour been done to anyone of my standing
as there will be to me, if it comes to pass that, kissing,
I gaze upon her white, shapely body,
svelte and smooth, and hold it in my arms.

If King Alfonso, whom the Muslims fear,
and the best count in Christendom
were to summon their armies
in God’s name against the treacherous pagan Saracens – for they have not yet left –
they would perform an excellent deed,
provided that one of them took with him the lord
and husband who confines and locks up and imprisons [my lady];
they have no sin that would not be forgiven them.

I will stay behind and not go elsewhere,
or turn my bridle in any other direction;
and let none of you ask me why!
For I will never unseal my lips on your account.
